Different Massage Techniques

Oftentimes, our clients will inquire “what is the difference between the type of massage modalities?” Below is a simple explanation of the three primary methodologies used when performing massage therapy.

Swedish Massage

The modality that comes to mind when most people think of massage. As the best-known type of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. But Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.

Therapeutic Massage

Combines the long relaxing strokes of a Swedish Massage with elements of some deep tissue work. If your Therapist finds muscle knots and tension during a requested Therapeutic Massage, they will be addressed. If the client has requested a Swedish massage, those areas will not be addressed because the assumption is that the client is interested in a strictly relaxing treatment.

Deep Tissue Massage

A type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used as classic Therapeutic Massage, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.

These are just surface explanations to help you to understand the difference in technique. Of course, combinations of the types can be used. Some therapists like to incorporate warm stones to further loosen the muscles. Essential oils that offer therapeutic and detoxifying remedies can also be added into a massage treatment.
